What Are Your Options For Home Internet Service

Blog

Do you need to get Internet service to your home, but you are feeling a bit confused about all your options? It will help to know more about the following types of Internet services so that you can pick the right one.

Dial-Up

Believe it or not, dial-up Internet is still being used these days. It may be the only option available to underserved parts of the country that simply do not have other options. It uses the phone line to transmit the data and can be quite limited in terms of the speed that it can do it.

DSL

The next step up will be a DSL connection, which also uses the phone line, but does it in a different way. DSL doesn't use the voice portion of the phone line, but a different frequency that allows for a faster data connection. Keep in mind that having a phone line does not mean that DSL service is available in your area, but it can be a viable option for people with limited needs.

Cable

Cable Internet is the most common type of Internet service these days. It uses the coaxial cable system that is used to deliver a television signal to your home. This is why cable Internet is widely available across the country, since those same television providers are able to offer the Internet as well. A common problem with cable Internet is that the speeds can be affected by the other Internet usage in your area, which is why speeds are often capped. This is especially true of upload speeds, which are limited to a slower bandwidth than download speeds.

Satellite

Satellite Internet is great for rural areas that do not have access to cable Internet. It works by receiving the data connection through a satellite, which adds some additional latency to the data connection. This means that you may have trouble doing things on the Internet that involve low latency, such as video chatting, playing video games online, and streaming live television.

Mobile

Many mobile phone providers also have wireless Internet service for your home. It uses the same network as your cell phone's Internet service, but it allows you to connect your home devices to the Internet. One of the great things about mobile Internet is that there is no complicated installation. All you typically need is a power outlet to plug the modem into, and it will receive the wireless signal and distribute it to the rest of your home.

Staying Safe Online

When my husband and I decided to put a family computer smack dab in the middle of the living room, I never thought that we would have a difficult time keeping our kids safe online. Unfortunately, after a few weeks, we realized that one or more of our children was struggling with visiting websites where they shouldn't step foot. After a long process of testing out different internet safety software, we learned how to keep our kids safer. I want to show you the things that we learned, which is why I put up this site. Read these articles to learn more about internet safety, so that you can protect your children from online predators.
