If you work in a data center (such as Cologix), your job probably confines you to a desk and a chair all day. Unfortunately, while that's a good way to earn a living, it doesn't do much for your health. Sedentary jobs have been linked to various health problems including type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cancer-related deaths. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to minimize the dangers associated with a sedentary job. Here are three steps you can take each day that will help improve your health.
Break up the Day
If you spend the majority of your day sitting at a desk, you need to break up the day a bit. Set an alarm for 60-minute increments. When the alarm goes off, get up and walk to the end of the hallway, or walk to the copier. This will ensure that your body gets some movement at least once every hour.
If you can't leave your cubicle unless you're on a scheduled break, that's okay. There's still a way for you to get your body moving throughout the day. When your alarm goes off, simply stand up and jog in place, or wiggle your toes. Just make sure that you're moving.
Take the Stairs
If you've made friends with the elevator, it's time to make a new friend. Instead of taking the elevator each time you leave the floor you're on, try taking the stairs at least once a day. The cardiovascular workout you get from taking the stairs will help your heart and the rest of your body, as well. The best part about taking the stairs is that you can get a workout without any equipment or special clothing. Start a Walking Group
If you and your colleagues take lunch at the same time, start a company walking group. Instead of spending your lunch breaks locked up in the office lounge, you can get outside and take a walk. The walk will invigorate your body, get your circulation amped up, and give you some much-needed fresh air.
